Importance of Upholstery Cleaning
Regular upholstery cleaning isn’t just about maintaining appearances—it’s crucial for your health too.
From couches to armchairs, the upholstered furniture in your home traps allergens and dust particles that can affect the air you breathe.
Keeping your upholstery clean through regular deep cleaning with a professional upholstery cleaning service means improving indoor air quality and safeguarding your family’s health.
Impact on Indoor Air Quality
Imagine sitting on a couch that’s been collecting dust, pet dander, and pollen for months.
Every time you plop down on your couch, you stir up an invisible (or not so invisible) cloud of dust, allergens, and possibly even mold spores that you then breathe in.
Consistent upholstery cleaning reduces these airborne pollutants and can dramatically improve the air quality in your home, making it safer for everyone, especially those with respiratory issues.
Factors to Consider Before Choosing Upholstery Cleaning Services
Not all upholstery cleaners are created equal, and choosing the right service can make all the difference.
Choosing the right service for “upholstery cleaning near me” involves more than just scanning through local listings.
Consider these critical factors regarding your upholstery to ensure you get the best fit for your needs.
Types of Upholstery Fabrics
From delicate silk to sturdy cotton, the type of fabric affects the cleaning method needed. Understanding your upholstery’s material is the first step in preserving its beauty and longevity.
We’ve talked at length about the different types of fabrics and how each should be cleaned.
For a more in-depth analysis of the various types of upholstery and things you should know about your furniture, check out this article.
The type of upholstery fabric on your furniture will help determine the type of upholstery cleaning process you’ll need.
Whether you go with steam cleaning, dry cleaning, or other specialized cleaning solutions will depend entirely on your fabric.
For example, we use an entirely different cleaning product on leather couches than any other type of fabric, while a fabric like velvet is typically dry-cleaned and gently brushed.
Delicate Fabrics vs. Durable Fabrics
While delicate fabrics might require gentle, specialized cleaning techniques to avoid damage, durable fabrics can withstand more rigorous treatments.
Choosing the right method based on fabric type can prevent damage and ensure thorough cleaning.
This applies, not just to the type of fabric but the age of the fabric. Even the most durable fabric can become brittle and weak.
Antique fabrics require specialized professional cleaning techniques to avoid tears in fabric.
Presence of Pet Hair or Stains
It’s inevitable, homes with pets or children tend to face more frequent spills or stains.
Consider if your pieces of furniture require spot treatment for pet stains or if the entire piece needs professional upholstery cleaning.
We spot-treat stains like wine stains and pet urine stains, if you haven’t had your regular upholstery cleaning service yet, we would suggest opting for regular cleaning rather than spot treatments.
Specialized cleaning services can address these challenges, leaving your upholstery looking and smelling fresh.
Types of Upholstery Cleaning Methods
The method chosen can greatly affect the outcome of your cleaning, and, as mentioned above, is highly dependent on the upholstery type.
Here’s a brief rundown of the three different types of regular upholstery cleaning.
Steam Cleaning
This is the hot water extraction method.

This method uses hot water steam to penetrate deep into fabric fibers, removing dirt and allergens without the use of harsh chemicals.
The steam cleaning equipment injects the hot steam into the fibers of the furniture, and then immediately extracts the steam and the harmful dirt trapped in the fibers.
This is the method we most recommend. It provides the deepest clean and removes the buildup of dirt and stains from your various types of furniture.
Steam cleaning is also the most versatile and can be performed on a variety of other surfaces like carpet and tile, which can help you save time and money when finding a professional upholstery cleaner.
Dry Cleaning
Ideal for materials that shouldn’t be exposed to water, dry cleaning involves chemicals that clean without moisture, protecting the fabric while effectively removing stains.
This process involves applying a dry foam chemical and gently brushing the fabric with a bonnet or scrubber to pull up the dirt from the surface of your furniture.
This method does not provide as deep of a clean and much of the cleaning product remains in the fabric, but does improve the overall appearance of the furniture.
Chemical Cleaning
Chemical cleaning refers to the cleaning of fabrics that neither steam cleaning nor dry cleaning would be suitable for.
As mentioned, this would refer to fabrics like leather and cowhide, which require specialized products and moisturizers to keep the hide from drying out and cracking.
This would also apply to very stubborn stains like ink stains or grease stains, where specialized cleaning solutions are needed to break down the stain.
Professional vs. DIY Upholstery Cleaning
Choosing between professional services and doing it yourself can be a tough decision.
We’ve taken a moment to outline things to consider when choosing between DIY or cleaning professionals.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Hiring a Professional Cleaner
Professionals have the equipment and expertise to deep clean the different upholstery fiber types and types of stains.
The crews and team members are trained to identify the best cleaning methods for each specific piece of furniture.
Not only that, furniture cleaning services have specialized cleaning products that are designed to handle individual spots and stains, rather than using a DIY concoction.
Many of these services carry eco-friendly products too, for your peace of mind.
Professionals are also able to offer things like fabric protectors to protect against future stains.
However, this option might be more costly than DIY methods, as is typical.
As a small, local, family business, we strive to keep our pricing competitive and transparent.

Risks of DIY Upholstery Cleaning
DIY approaches can be cost-effective, but there’s a risk of using the wrong products or methods that could permanently damage your upholstery.
Cost-effective today does not mean cost-effective tomorrow.
We have provided article upon article of various DIY techniques to handle various spots and stains, which we are happy to continue providing.
However, without the proper tools and knowledge, these methods can backfire, despite all of our best efforts.
Some of the risks of DIY upholstery cleaning include the use of inappropriate cleaning solutions that can lead to fabric discoloration, weakening of fibers, or even permanent stains.
Additionally, inadequate removal of moisture during the cleaning process can encourage mold and mildew growth within the furniture, potentially leading to health problems.
In trying to save money, you might end up paying more for repairs or even replacement if the furniture is severely damaged.

My rug looked like new, and the tiles sparkled! He was also able to get a few small stains off of the couch. Very happy with the results!!

FAQ
Frequently asked questions help address common concerns and provide additional information to help you make an informed decision about your upholstery cleaning needs.
We typically recommend upholstery is cleaned professionally every 9 to 12 months, with spot treatment in between as needed.
There are a variety of methods available when it comes to upholstery cleaning. The two most common ways are steam cleaning, or hot water extraction, and dry cleaning. Specialized cleaning methods do exist for specialty fabrics like suede, leather, and cow’s hide.
While you could theoretically clean everything the same way, it may not be the best option based on your specific type of fabric.
For example, you could steam-clean leather, but the steam will dry out the natural hide causing it to crack.
The average cost of upholstery cleaning varies based on a variety of things, including the size of the furniture, the color of the fabric, the type of fabric, the number of pillows and cushions, and the condition of the fabric.
For an average couch, about 6 to 7 linear feet, the total process will take about an hour. We just ask that any toys or other belongings like blankets or such, be removed from the couch.
We also ask that you refrain from sitting on the couch for at least 3-4 hours after the cleaning.
