Why Moisture Content Decides the Outcome
Wood is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs and releases moisture in response to the surrounding air. As it takes on moisture, it expands across the grain, and as it dries, it contracts. That movement never stops for the life of the floor.
Refinishing freezes a moment in that cycle. Sanding removes material to create a flat plane, so whatever the board shape is at that moment becomes the new baseline. If the boards were swollen and slightly cupped when they were flattened, they will develop the opposite problem when they dry back to normal.
Regular wood floor cleaning will not correct this kind of movement, since the swelling and shrinking is driven by ambient humidity rather than surface dirt.
This is why a floor can be sanded perfectly and still look wrong six months later. The workmanship was fine. The timing was not.
The Range Wood Floors Should Sit In
The National Wood Flooring Association recommends keeping indoor relative humidity between 30 and 50 percent to protect hardwood from expansion and contraction. Floors that live inside that band stay dimensionally stable and hold a finish well.
Wood moisture content itself is measured separately with a meter, and the reading needs to be consistent with the environment the floor will actually live in. A board that reads high relative to the room is going to shrink after refinishing, and one that reads low is going to swell.

Rushing this is the most common shortcut in the trade, because acclimation looks like doing nothing and clients are waiting. A floor that had a leak two weeks ago is not ready to sand simply because the surface feels dry to the hand, since the moisture that soaked into the boards and subfloor takes considerably longer to leave.
Conditions during and after the work matter too. Running air conditioning aggressively or leaving windows open on a humid evening between finish coats changes the environment the floor is settling into, which is why we give homeowners specific guidance for the days a job is running.

Can cupped floors be sanded flat?
Sometimes, but only after the moisture source has been resolved and the boards have returned to a stable condition. Sanding a floor flat while it is still cupped removes material from the raised edges, so when the boards dry and flatten, the result is a crowned floor rather than a level one.
How many times can a hardwood floor be refinished?
Most solid hardwood tolerates five to eight refinishing cycles depending on the thickness above the tongue. Engineered hardwood has a thinner wear layer and typically allows one to three, depending on construction. We check the wear layer before quoting refinishing on engineered floors.
Does a screen and recoat have the same moisture requirements?
